Social Services Care Package

When I was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome I received a detailed twelve page diagnostic report. The main recommendation was that I needed to get a lot of personal and individual help to find a job, because having a job would make me feel less socially isolated and give me a purpose to my life. It didn't happen though; instead I received an extensive, and expensive, care package consisting of immediately getting my benefits increased and a free mobility travel pass, time to spend with a support worker one day a week, days out with another support worker, and an annual budget to spend on trips to the theatre.

This care package isn't really what I want, or need, at all; I just need to be employed...it's as simple as that. However there is no alternative on offer and so I have to accept things as they are; my life is definitely better than it was before my diagnosis - it's just not the life I think I should be living.

My Asperger's Syndrome

I was diagnosed with Asperger's syndrome six years ago when I was forty seven years old. Asperger's syndrome is a lifelong condition which the medical experts say is a form of autism, but I don't agree with this conclusion.

Because of the condition, and my personal circumstances, I have found it very difficult to find a place for myself in the world. I've been lost and lonely all my life, and not had much money for long periods of time. Financially, things are much better now than they were before my diagnosis...but I'm still alone, bored, and unfulfilled.

Pomfretian

The blog title? Well, I'm a Pomfretian; I was born in Pontefract. In fact I was born in Southmoor Hospital at Hemsworth; the building used to be the workhouse, and this has affected my whole life and how I live it.

I've never lived at Hemsworth though, prior to moving to Doncaster I lived in the two former mining villages of Great Houghton and Thurnscoe.

Welcome To My Blog

Hello, and welcome to the blog. I've been thinking about starting this blog for a long time. This will be the fourth blog I've started. The other three were a silly little conversational jokey blog on a small independent blogging platform, an archive of my poems, and my walking blog. Only my walking blog is now updated; and here's the link to it - I usually go walking at least once a week.

Apart from walking I also enjoy days out, visits to the theatre, watching films online (especially sci-fi), news, politics, and current affairs...and cricket (I love the stats.)
